This imposing, six-story apartment building at 180 Franklin Street sits between India and Java streets in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn. The structure was erected in 1885 and according to its landmark designation by the city, it was "one of the most important 19th Century apartment houses in New York City."

It is also one of the earliest model housing projects for the working class, boasting features which were a radical departure from the contemporary standards set for workers' housing. These days, it's a conveniently located rental building known as The Astral with 1-bedroom rentals listed from $1,785/month. Corcoran handles leasing and also has 2-bedroom units for $2,150/month; see the listings here.

The building also goes by addresses 76 India Street and 182 India Street, and many of the homes inside offer hardwood floors and large kitchens. A cohesive interior design is left to the renter - and there are endless possibilities to create the perfect Brooklyn apartment in a trendy locale. The living areas are large and a flex space can be created; there is also good closet space. Cats are permitted, but no dogs. Heat and hot water are included in the rent.

The neighborhood is serviced by transit including the India Street ferry, Citi Bike and also the L and G subways. There are several good dining options like the neighborhood favorite Anella at 222 Franklin Street, and there are lots of shopping and entertainment options in both Greenpoint and neighboring Williamsburg.
