The 9-story building known as The Alabama in Greenwich Village at 15 East 11th Street was erected in 1903 and is on the New York City registry of landmarked buildings. It was previously owned by Yeshiva University but was purchased in 2016 and underwent a multi-million-dollar transformation to luxury rental housing. The historic building is on a lovely tree-lined block and caters to students and young professionals; many residents attend NYU, Cardozo Law or The New School.

In total, the Alabama has 92 apartments with 173 bedrooms. The residences come in a variety of floor plans, from studios to three-bedroom layouts, and prices range from $2,280 to $4,123 per bedroom. Don’t expect dorm-style living here; each unit is fully furnished and has its own kitchen and bathroom. Interiors feature modern furniture, upgraded kitchens, and cable TV and wifi are included. Current listings show studios from $3,273/month, 1 bedrooms from $4,123/month and 3 bedrooms from $6,450/month.

The Alabama first launched leasing in 2017 and some residences are available for summer housing, though the property is currently 97% leased for the remainder of summer 2018. The renovation transformed not only the residences but the building itself, too. There were upgrades to elevators, electrical services and everything else that comes with renovating a 100+ year old structure. The project was well-received; it was recognized at the 10th Annual Interface Student Housing Conference with the “Best Renovation of Existing Project” award for its work.
