Earlier this week, the Federal Reserve approved an interest rate increase in the hopes of combating inflation. It remains to be seen what effect this will have on the economy as a whole and homeownership, but the timing coincides with a report from RentCafe showing that across the country, renting is at the highest level in over half a century. New York was not among the cities or zip codes where renters became the majority over the past decade, perhaps because renters already accounted for a significant portion of the population. Indeed, zip code 10162 (a small section of the Upper East Side) is one of five in the United States populated entirely by renters. Additionally, eight Upper Manhattan zip codes recorded renter populations of 90% or higher.

After a year and a half of dizzying rent increases, things are starting to turn around in the rent market. According to ApartmentList's November rent report, rents in New York decreased 2.2% month-over-month in September in one of the sharpest declines in the country. This comes as welcome news to prospective renters, but they are still in an expensive market: The report also found that New York City rents are up 8.6% in comparison to last year.

Meanwhile, a total of 483 rental listings experienced price reductions from October 26-November 1. A selection of notable listings may be found below, but they may not last long.
