Art on the Eastern Front: The Bushwick Arts Scene

SEPTEMBER 22, 2009

Head east on the L to discover the city's newest important art hub.

New York City is without question a center of the international art world. Artists, gallerists, dealers and art lovers have made tracks to the galleries of, in their turn, SoHo, Chelsea, DUMBO and, more recently, the galleries of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. With rising rents on work and gallery spaces, the eastward march continues. Bushwick, east of the 'burg, has been coming into its own as an art destination.

Anchored by multi-media-centered art space Third Ward in the center of the area's more industrial environs, young and established artists have opened their studios to visitors and put the neighborhood on the map. Recent additions include the rapidly-expanding Bushwick Open Studios and Art Festival, which recently held its third annual event featuring over three miles of studio tours, gallery openings and events. Collectives and galleries like Factory Fresh, Ad Hoc Art, Pocket Utopia and dozens of others like them have a been featuring the work of a distinguished roster of local and international artists.
