Groundhog Day Roundup: NYC Apartment Buildings and Their Shadows

FEBRUARY 2, 2012

Tall buildings may cast tall shadows on our parks, but there’s plenty of room for both in a city that ain’t Punxsutawney. NYC apartment buildings groundhog day 2012

Our furry prognosticator’s plight may send six more winter weeks our way, but some of New York City’s best apartment buildings cast familiar–and sometimes dramatic–shadows in every season. Here are just a few:

Time Warner Center at 80 Columbus Circle
The original–and controversial–design for this monumental development was met with loud protest due to the imposing shadows it would cast over Central Park. After a new architect and a new design, the sleek 80-story double towers completed in 2004 now throw unmistakable shadows as they reflect the sun and provide panoramic views. But having a far greater impact on the city are the Center's 225 condominium apartments, international hotel, luxury shopping, top restaurants, and Whole Foods market.

Madison Green at 5 East 22nd Street
Casting shadows from one of the city’s most dramatic spots at the south end of Madison Square Park, this 31-story condominium residence, completed in 1983, offers spectacular views and a sought-after location at the center of the trendy Flatiron district. The building's 424 units vary among 44 different apartment layouts, and the building's public spaces are expansive and well-landscaped.

2 Horatio Street
This elegant 17-story West Village co-op building casts its shadow upon Jackson Square Park at the bustling intersection of Greenwich and Eighth Avenues. The 242-unit residence was built in 1931 by Bing & Bing and designed by Robert Lyons with two stunning angled balcony elements.

Take that, Phil.
