Like yoga before it, meditation has recently gone from a niche activity to a mainstream practice. That was especially the case during the coronavirus pandemic - meditation app Headspace reports that its downloads have doubled since March 2020, and its competitor Calm has surpassed 100 million downloads. As studies have shown that meditation can reduce negative emotions, increase patience and creativity, and lead to better stress management, it’s not surprising that many would wish for these during a stressful time.

However, the benefits of meditation are not always easy to achieve in an apartment — the sound of a partner’s Zoom call or TV show or a pet's whine or scratch at a closed-door can cut into the peace of the session, and shutting oneself in the bathroom for at least 10 minutes isn’t an ideal solution. For some lucky New Yorkers, this is where in-building meditation rooms come in. Gramercy Square led the charge with a studio co-designed by MNDFL, and a crop of new developments has added meditation rooms to their health and wellness amenity packages. These are not white boxes, but spaces intentionally designed with a tranquil atmosphere to help residents in their practice. We take a look at new developments with meditation rooms among the amenities package in this time of increased stress and uncertainty.
