The New York City subway map just got its first major redesign in half a century, and it’s a big step toward making the system easier to navigate. Created by the MTA’s in-house design team, the new map uses bold colors, clean lines, and a simpler layout that nods to Massimo Vignelli’s iconic 1972 design. It’s easier to read—especially on screens—with horizontal text, high-contrast station markers, and an uncluttered legend that includes accessibility info, transfer points, and a QR code for real-time updates. The goal? A modern map that matches the needs of today’s riders.

This update is part of a long history of subway map changes, each trying to strike the right balance between clarity and geographic accuracy. The earliest maps were fragmented by company, which caused confusion until they were unified under city control. Designers like George Salomon, Massimo Vignelli, and Michael Hertz all left their mark—Vignelli with his sleek, abstract look, and Hertz with a more realistic layout that became the standard for decades. The new map draws from both approaches, blending clean visuals with practical geography to create something that’s both familiar and fresh.
