In some cases, real estate listings will describe primary baths as having a number of fixtures, defined here as components with their own drains. Just like a classic six apartment must have that number of rooms to be accurately described as such, a three-, four-, or five-piece bathroom must include that total number of fixtures. Examples of popular terms and the fixtures likeliest to be found in each are as follows:

  • Three-fixture bathrooms are the most efficient layouts and the point where a room can be considered a full bath as opposed to a half-bath/powder room. These include a toilet, sink, and either a shower stall or bathtub/shower combination.

  • Four-fixture bathrooms allow for a little more flexibility. Sometimes this term refers to a bathroom with dual sinks alongside a toilet and bathtub/shower combination, while it would also accurately describe a bathroom with a single sink, toilet, a stall shower, and a separate soaking tub.

  • Five-fixture bathrooms and larger are among the most decadent. The most common components are a double sink, toilet, walk-in shower, and separate soaking tub. However, these can also include features like double showers or bidets.
Below, we look at listings with beautifully appointed five-fixture primary bathrooms. This size is likeliest to be found in the most luxurious listings; however, all of the following are priced under $3 million.
