When perusing real estate listings these days, New York apartment-hunters have more likely than not stumbled upon the term “casement windows” to describe a unit’s fenestration. This has proven especially popular in buildings that have been newly constructed or recently converted in formerly industrial districts. As the window can make or break the New York living experience, we examine the pros, cons, and buildings featuring this type of window.

Also known as “crank windows,” casement windows attach to the side of the frame and swing outward. The look lends an air of authenticity to shiny new construction, and opening them allows for excellent air flow and ventilation. This can reduce reliance on a home’s HVAC system, which makes these windows environmentally friendly as well as aesthetically pleasing.

However, there are some aspects of casement windows that homebuyers would be well advised to keep in mind. These windows don’t always come with screens, and those that do are especially vulnerable to tearing. This type of window is also vulnerable to breakage in windstorms, which may become more of a problem as the realities and effects of climate change get past ignoring. These windows usually open inward, which can take up more space than some would like. Finally, those who are not lucky enough to have central air conditioning will have to buy a special unit to go in these windows.
