Landing Road Residence Landing Road Residence
A new, first of its kind development is under construction at the edge of the University Heights neighborhood of the Bronx. The vacant lot between Cedar Avenue and the Major Deegan Expressway is being transformed into a 9-story building which will house both working homeless and low-income individuals. The project, named Landing Road Residence, is part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s HomeStretch program and will consist of a 200-bed shelter on the lower two levels of the building, and 135 affordable apartments on the remaining seven stories.
The residences will include studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units for working adults and families earning an annual income less than $46,620. Although the shelter and residences are co-located, they will have separate entrances. The Bowery Resident’s Committee will assist in funding the project; they will also provide on-site social services, like workforce development training and employee and housing retention services, to ease the transition from shelter living to self-sufficiency.
Landing Road Residence is being designed by Edelman Sultan Knox Wood Architects who are well-versed in crafting multi-familty residential buildings throughout the city. In addition to the interesting bay window projections and a color-blocked facade, the building will include a rooftop solar panel system. The energy-efficient building is receiving funding from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. With foundation work complete, the building is now rising and is slated for completion in August 2017.
