A new landmark has ascended into the Downtown Brooklyn skyline and this fall, the 32-story spire will be ready for occupancy. In preparation, a new teaser site has launched for the building's 300 market rate apartments. The site reveals a new rendering, logo and a subscription form for prospective renters to stay in the loop with future updates.
Developed by legendary DUMBO-based developers Two Trees and designed by acclaimed Mexican architect Enrique Norten, the building is comprised of 381 apartments of which 20% are earmarked for low-income tenants. At its podium will be 50,000 square feet of cultural facilities that include a public library branch, BAM's Hamm Archives Center and 651 ARTS, a performing arts organization devoted to artists of the African Diaspora. Alongside its culture-loaded base will be a stepped plaza ideal for outdoor programs, such as film screenings, dance performances or farmer’s markets.
Norten's architecture firm Ten Arquitectos describes the building as a gateway to Brooklyn's emerging cultural district. The building rises from a former parking lot upon a triangular site bounded by Flatbush, Ashland, and Lafayette Avenues; and across from the landmarked Brooklyn Academy of Music Peter Jay Sharp Building and the domed Williamsburg Savings Bank Building (One Hanson Place). The nearly 400-foot tall building's dynamic shape is articulated as three volumes: a central circulation spine and two flanking volumes, where the apartments are located. The bold form is unified by a perforated metal skin highlighted by a randomized pattern of dark grey panels, and cutaway areas revealing fully-glazed sections.
A housing lottery for the building's 76 affordable units will be held later this summer and completion is slated by the end of the year.
