Co-living rental Common Baltic offers extra precautions and Amazon gift cards in light of COVID-19

When NYC universities shut down earlier this year due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Common Baltic was among the buildings welcoming displaced students. More recently, new safety procedures and incentives have been announced. The nine-story building at 595 Baltic Street looks like any other Boerum Hill rental, but there is more to this address than meets the eye: In a partnership with Adam America and Common Living, Common Baltic offers a combination of shared living suites and "traditional" studio and one-bedroom apartments.

In order to ensure the safety of the building's team and community, Common is offering virtual and live video tours of all its properties. In-person tours are only possible at vacant homes. Common explains that since the COVID-19 pandemic, they’ve changed their operations on a national level to increase cleanings of shared spaces, restock supplies more often, and limit the entrance of guests. The new safety precautions and incentives are the latest example of Common's ability to adapt to the times and offer residents what they need and want. From the start, members have been able to opt in to services like weekly cleaning and household restocking, thus eliminating some of the most frequent sources of friction among flatmates.

Additionally, Common Baltic is offering reduced pricing, cash-free security deposit options, and incentives for prospective members who take a virtual tour and sign a lease on the same day. These members will receive a $200 Amazon gift card. Moreover, students who sign a lease with their email ending in ".edu" will receive a $500 gift card.

Current availabilities start at $2,816/month for studios and $5,314/month for two-bedrooms. While those figures come in well above the Boerum Hill medians of $2,693/month and $4,100/month, for respective similar units (per CityRealty listings).

From the shared living spaces to the private bedrooms, the apartments come fully furnished with pieces from West Elm and Restoration Hardware. The kitchens are outfitted with high-end appliances, dishware, and other essentials. All units have washer/dryers and free high-speed WiFi, and Common Baltic is one of a handful of Common buildings that allows pets.

Amenities include a bike room, fitness center, lounge, and roof deck with sweeping views of Brooklyn. Common Living's events curated by member services and "house leaders" on each floor may be temporarily suspended in the wake of the social distancing guidelines, but the building still fosters a friendly environment that helps residents get to know each other. The Connect by Common directory allows residents to set up profiles and find each other by city or interest tags. Additionally, the Chat feature in the Connect by Common app lets residents and staff connect with each other. The app also tells residents about exclusive perks and discounts.
