Home-Schooling: Opting-Out of the Preschool Rat Race?

NOVEMBER 10, 2009

A thriving community of New York City parents believes that home-schooling is a perfect alternative to the ultra-competitive jungle of schools available to the city's youngest scholars.

While it's not for everyone, home-schooling appeals to parents who feel their kids' educational, social and cultural needs would be better met by a different sort of curriculum: one they've devised—and supervised—themselves. Parents are required to register their kids as home-schooled at age 6, so pre-school is a more popular home-schooling choice.

A recent NY Times article delved into the reasoning behind the choice for a few parents. There are plenty of resources available for New York parents interested in looking into home-schooling like the New York Home Educators' Network site, and parent groups and blogs (like Babble) can provide an insider's look at the pros, cons and daily life of kids and their parents who have chosen to educate their kids at home. Parents can also meet through the New York City Home Educators Alliance, a home-schooling bulletin board for parents who have chosen this less-traveled early education road.
