Member's Circle: Art Museum Memberships

JUNE 2, 2009

Membership gets you more from your favorite art museums and helps them thrive.

If you love art, you might spend a tidy sum at New York City's exhaustive cornucopia of art museums, all of whom depend heavily on memberships to keep their level of excellence up. To this end, they go the extra mile to entice patrons to invest in memberships. Paying the $20-or-so admission for each museum visit will almost always exceed the price you'll pay for a yearly membership.

The city's big names like the Met, MoMA , the Whitney and the smaller New Museum offer perks like private parties, music performances, gift store and restaurant discounts and early viewing of exhibitions that escalate with each membership level, as well as extras unique to each. The Whitney offers members discounts at neighborhood businesses, for example, and New York Magazine gives the Rubin Museum of Art kudos for Best Family Museum Membership for its special art programs for kids.

Affiliate groups are geared toward young urban art-lovers and collectors seeking like-minded company as well as access to private events. Groups like the MoMA Junior Associates, the Met's Apollo Circle and the Young Collectors at the Museum of Art and Design often require steeper membership dues, but perks include big-name performances at private parties, members-only viewings for popular exhibitions and more.
