Notable NYC (Billionaire) Neighbors

JANUARY 3, 2013

2012 was a good year for billionaires seeking to feather their real estate portfolios with impossibly pricey condos and co-ops in some of Manhattan’s best buildings–though many have apartments available for far less than these eight-figure price tags.

Year-end roundups and recaps highlight all the big-ticket action in the city’s luxury residential market. Starting off the year with Sandy Weill’s uber-trophy 15 Central Park West penthouse selling to Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev for $88 million, the year saw more than 800 sales over $4 million–a 20 percent rise in signed contracts over 2011, 7 percent higher than 2007, the previous high-sales year. 129 sales closed at over $10 million and four closed at over $50 million, including the aforementioned record-busting 15 CPW sale (TheRealDeal).

More sit-up-and-take-note transactions: An 18-room duplex at 834 Fifth Avenue (also home to Anne and Robert Bass, who bought a 12th floor unit for $42 million) sold for $24 million in cash to hedge funder Philippe Laffont; at 730 Park Avenue, a duplex with five terraces, a solarium and a greenhouse breakfast room with a glass ceiling sold for $39 million; the penthouse at 2 East 70th Street sold for $40 million; $52 million bought heiress Courtney Sale Ross’s 30-room duplex at 740 Park Avenue; David Geffen grabbed Denise Rich’s duplex penthouse at 785 Fifth Avenue for $54 million; casino king Steve Wynn put $70 million to win on a penthouse with 26 Central Park-facing windows on the 30th and 31st floors at the Ritz-Carlton at 50 Central Park South (NYO).

Just as the year drew to a close, billionaire Marc Rowan bought a co-op at 927 Fifth Avenue for $26 million (NYO) and two $20 million listings at 998 Fifth Avenue left the market (NYPost).
