Superior Interiors: New Sites for DIY Decorators

DECEMBER 14, 2010

Two insider-launched new additions bring much-needed quality to the world of online home decor publications.

Just when lovers of chic-but-accessible interior design had gotten over the loss of their beloved Domino magazine, shelter-design salvation came in the form of a newcomer to the Curbed media empire and Lonny, a new publication that attempts to fill the void left by the demise of the aforementioned Condé mag.

Curbed National leaves the real estate gossip to the brand’s locally-focused siblings and concerns itself with what’s on the inside, which often means high-end design and crave-worthy celebrity swag. Recent features include home decorating show roundups, Apartment Therapy-style house tours and the skinny on a Frank Lloyd Wright home that’s up for sale in Chicago.

While Curbed began its life in the blogosphere, new online interiors magazine Lonny attempts to woo die-hard print mag junkies while exploring the possibilities of digital media. Founded by former Domino staffer Michelle Adams, Lonny is a lovingly-curated lookbook featuring stunning photos and plenty of the DIY ethic and tips from top decorators that made Domino such a favorite. The digi-zine offers bi-monthly PDF files for subscribers for a magazine-like page-turning experience with digital perks like the ability to clip, copy and save. But it’s the content—stunning photos of eclectic, livable rooms and eye-pleasing objéts that has created the nascent publication’s large, loyal following—with well-deserved credit going to Adams’s talent for interpreting the best decorating trends and offering ideas for re-creating them at home.
