Unforgettable Icons: I [Heart] NY

SEPTEMBER 23, 2008

New Yorkers Get to the Heart of the Matter

The sentiment is simple, but it speaks volumes. Even in a city known by its icons, the “I [heart] NY” logo, with its black text (the font is American Typewriter) and red heart on a plain white background is a standout.

The logo was created 1977, when, with an eye to re-invigorating tourism for the state—and for a city in need of an image update. Graphic designer and native New Yorker Milton Glaser, working for Wells Rich Greene, designed the logo, calling it a labor of love. Other elements of the campaign, which was only intended to last a few months, included ads featuring Frank Sinatra and Yul Brynner.

The slogan and logo came to symbolize New York City’s cultural impact for tourists as well as residents, and is considered one of the best-ever examples of a successful branding campaign.

While other states try new taglines to tout tourism, New York has stayed with the essential message from the heart. In 2007, on the 30th anniversary of the original, the “I Love New York” campaign was renewed, led by high-profile ad agency Saatchi & Saatchi with new faces like singer Marc Anthony and former Mayor Rudy Giuliani. The faces may change but the message remains the same.
