The major December holidays fall next week, and data suggests that people are ready for it: According to Adobe Analytics, consumers spent $77.4 billion online from November 1-24, and Black Friday sales broke a record as consumers spent $10.8 billion online on that day. Both figures show an increase from 2023, and QuickBooks’ Holiday Shopping Report found that consumers prefer to shop online for the convenience and the potential for free and discounted shipping (h/t Forbes). But after the shopping is done, there remains the question of the items successfully reaching their purchasers. According to a 2023 study by SafeWise, New York City was the worst city in the nation for package theft.
This inspired a new package delivery locker program throughout the city, where customers can receive a QR code and visit a secure location to pick up their packages. However, residential developers recognize that online shopping is a part of life during the holiday season and all year round; thus, almost no new rental or sales development in New York is complete without a secure package room and/or Amazon hub lockers.
In this article:
Some buildings are prepared to take it one step further to ensure that residents receive their deliveries. Prewar doorman buildings that might not have the space to handle the volume of today's online shopping offer the service of hand-delivering mail and packages to residents’ doors. This is not a relic of bygone days; some of Manhattan's newest developments also offer direct-to-door delivery to burnish their luxury, full-service credentials. (P.S. If your building does offer this service, a generous holiday tip would not go amiss.)
