Spanning Upper Manhattan from the Hudson River to the Harlem River, 125th Street is home to buildings with rich history like the notable Apollo Theater, and also to less-impressive new developments with chain retailers. Within proximity of the evolving street, which is co-named Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, newly constructed or redeveloped rental buildings have opened too, like 6 West 126th Street and 92 Morningside.
One of the latest to open, called Harlem 125, sits directly on the thoroughfare at 69 East 125th Street and launched leasing in May 2017. Current listings from Citi Habitats show various layouts are available for immediate move-ins with net effective rents starting under $2,000/month.

The site, developed by Greystone and Kutnicki Bernstein Architects, sits on a through-block lot between Park and Madison Avenue and rises to twelve floors at 125th street and to seven on 126th Street. Inside are 75 homes with up to two bedrooms that were designed by the up-and-coming Lauren Williams of Lauren Jayne Design, a boutique firm specializing in the design of high-end and hospitality interiors.
The on-site leasing office has a model unit from the designer, who utilized the neighborhood's rich history as a source of inspiration. In her third collaboration with Greystone, Williams fused her inspiration with industrial and contemporary elements to create the sleek and modern residences.
The neighborhood inspired more than the interiors. During construction in 2016, the site debuted a temporary 76-foot-long mural (see it here) from artist Lance Johnson, who also cites Harlem's history as inspiration for his work. Johnson was commissioned to design 12 original works for Harlem 125, and both he and Williams collaborated throughout the process which resulted in a complementary aesthetic among apartment interiors and shared spaces.

Williams designed a calm and neutral interior with materials like wide plank oak floors, and crafted contemporary kitchens with Caesartstone counters and stainless steel backsplashes that accent a GE appliance package. Bathrooms serve as a sanctuary with deep soaking tubs and a rainfall shower heads, set to soothing white subway tiled walls. Williams' design allows residents to easily add personalization, whether it expands on the Harlem influence or creates an entirely unique space. Beyond the interiors, residents have access to an amenity package that includes a roof deck and fitness center.
The rental is within one block of 125th Street's Metro North station and Marcus Garvey Park (home to a popular swimming pool), and is also near many transit options and big-box shopping at East River Plaza.
