Almost exactly a century ago, a four-story building rose at 319 Bowery in what is now the crossroads of the East Village and NoHo. It was originally a cigar factory and saw a later life as a mission. However, the building gained its greatest acclaim as the Amato Opera House, an intimate theater and a training ground for young artists. The performance space took its last bow in 2009 and now the building has opened its next scene as a mixed-use rental building with ground-floor retail and apartments above.
Documents from the city show that an LLC associated with Croman Real Estate/9300 Realty is the owner and closed on the opera house in late 2008 for $3.7 million. Permits listed Cherny Architect as the architect of record.
The outside of the building looks very similar to its halcyon days, but the interiors have undergone a gut renovation into modern full-floor apartments with high-end appliances, and sleek finishes All units feature private balconies, wide plank oak floors, recessed pinpoint halogen lighting, exposed brick, fireplaces, and in-unit washer/dryers. Chef’s kitchens are outfitted with stainless steel appliances, including a Miele espresso maker.
As spacious and well-appointed as the new apartments are, their location may be the most enviable part: The best dining, shopping, entertainment, and culture of the East Village and the Lower East Side is practically right outside the door (the parts that have not yet been converted to condos, at least). It is perhaps little wonder that current availabilities range from $10,995/month for a studio to $14,995/month for a three-bedroom, two-bath.
