Rockefeller Apartments is a 67 unit, 12 story cooperative composed of two buildings completed in 1936 at 17 West 54th Street and 24 West 55th Street. Commissioned by Nelson Rockefeller and designed by Wallace K. Harrison with J. André Fouilhoux, the complex is defined by International Style façades and rhythmic, curved bays of metal sash windows.
Originally conceived as rentals for out of town businesspeople working at Rockefeller Center, the complex was later converted to a co-op and received landmark designation in 1984. Its two wings face West 54th and West 55th Streets and are joined by a landscaped private courtyard with seating and a reflecting pond.
Many apartments retain herringbone floors, decorative fireplaces, curved bay windows, windowed kitchens and dining alcoves. South facing rooms overlook the Museum of Modern Art Sculpture Garden, while northern exposures face the courtyard; dual exposure layouts take in both. Penthouse A is ringed by roughly 500 square feet of terrace and has 10 foot ceilings with restored floor-to-ceiling steel framed doors.
The full service co-op has a 24 hour doorman, live-in superintendent, basement laundry and resident storage. Pets and pied-à-terre ownership are permitted. The Museum of Modern Art occupies the block immediately south, Fifth Avenue is less than a block east, Central Park begins five blocks north, and Rockefeller Center is several blocks south.
