Best American Restrooms

AUGUST 19, 2010

Are you sitting down?

Public restrooms. Mostly we only notice the bad ones, but someone’s taking notes. Restroom supply company Cintas holds an annual competition in which the best public restrooms in America are given a well-deserved moment in the sun. This year’s roundup includes two entries from the Big Apple: The public lavatory at Bryant Park is a top contender. Echoing the Beaux Arts design of the nearby New York Public Library, the parkside comfort station features a full-time attendant, fresh cut flowers and electronic seat covers. The loo at the Midtown Muse Hotel is also in the running for customized fixtures, marble and mosaic tile.

Serious competition rolls up from the Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles: Created for the pier’s 100th anniversary, visitors are privy to state-of-the-art water-inspired modern architecture. Bloggers have even weighed in on the most accommodating commodes: Gawker readers put the well-scrubbed washroom at (appropriately) Flushing Meadows Corona Park and the salle-de-bain at Bergdorfs at the head of the class.

Vote for your best-loved lav and check back for the winning WC when the contest ends in September. Or find a restroom when you need one: The Bathroom Diaries rates and reviews public toilets throughout the world.
