Daring Designers Pop Up at Den

SEPTEMBER 5, 2008

A fashion mini-empire is growing in the East Village: the epicenter for fashion-hungry shoposcenti.

Pop-up shops—installations-cum-retail-spaces in which a new designer “pops up” every few months—have long been popular in international cities like Berlin, and have recently taken hold in New York City. The newest and most newsworthy is the East Village shop Den. Owners of recent downtown men’s fashion map addition Odin have blessed their new atelier with a rotating list of featured occupants that includes A-list indie labels like Common Projects, Robert Geller, Karen Walker and denim deity Rag & Bone.

The interior is updated with each new (temporary) resident. Currently on deck is GQ/CFDA-award-winning brand Engineered Garments, for which the décor has been transformed into a turn of the (last) century American general store. The company’s head designer, Daiki Suzuki, creates classic workwear smartened up for city streets, as well as blankets, workboots, and other gear more ready for a trip off the grid.
