Jelly Finds a Sweet Spot for Coworkers

MARCH 13, 2009

An innovative coworking group gets down to business—peanut butter not included.

In February of 1996, a pair of entrepreneurial-minded roommates realized they enjoyed working from home, but they missed the camaraderie and shared ideas of the office. After they found that inviting like-minded friends over to work together was a great solution, they started Jelly, a casual coworking group that meets at their home and other locations around the city, often at buzz-worthy coworking venues like Brooklyn's Treehouse.

Provided: Chairs and sofas, interesting people to collaborate with. You'll just need to bring your laptop and your best ideas. Jelly groups occasionally have parties and informal meetups as well, so participants can get to know one another outside the workplace they've created. The group attracts designers, developers, and internet types used to coworking, but musicians, cooks, sound designers, tea sommeliers, product designers, photographers, writers, and more have played a role in the project's success, leading to its spread to 20 cities throughout the world—and folks are invited to start their own Jellies. Jelly has been getting tons of press as a great way to beat the tough economy when jobs are scarce but pressure is high to be creative and work hard.
