A new DUMBO condo builds around its factory past; Walls of grass to grow on Gansevoort/Greenwich Streets

The developer of DUMBO, Brooklyn condo conversion Kirkman Lofts has integrated bits of the building’s history into the former soap factory’s new design. The 7-story building—erected in 1915—uses the original exposed silos, sliced horizontally to work with apartment plans, as design accents in the apartments. Also, kitchen countertops are made from reclaimed wood from the original factory. The building offers three four-story townhouses with private entrances, elevators and roof decks in addition to apartments; building amenities include a video doorman service, package and delivery storages, bicycle and private storage and a fitness center.

Architect and artist Karen Bausman recently presented a plan to “grow” 24 turf-topped walls at the cobblestone-paved intersection of Gansevoort and Greenwich Streets in the Meatpacking District. The three-foot-high layered mini-wall installation, which will be attached to the ground with water-filled trays and called “The Wall Project,” is scheduled to spring up on April 2, 2012 and remain for the month of April. Ms. Bausman reportedly created the project after studying early Planning Commission records which established the grid pattern of many of Manhattan’s streets.
