Is 365 Broadway TriBeCa’s worst building makeover? Plans for a hotel above Chelsea Market vex community groups wary of changes to the historic neighborhood icon.

An August 30 post on Curbed NY described the 6-story building at 365 Broadway as “TriBeCa’s Most Hated.” In what was referred to as an “extreme makeover,” the reclad, roof-added, recently-revealed apartment building sports new floors for luxury apartments and has received a more ordinary-looking facade. Should the world actually recoil “in horror” as the piece suggests? There are pictures, so you can decide.

The company seeking to build a hotel above Chelsea Market has run afoul of community members who believe the project will alter the character of their neighborhood and that it will be sold in a few years. German-owned company Jamestown Properties says it has no plans to sell the building, and has met with community groups like Save Chelsea to discuss plans. Another community organization, Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation (GVSHP), opposes the addition as well, citing fears of overdevelopment and the need to preserve the historic building.
