Suddenly the future looks quite a bit closer to the present. Suddenly the future looks quite a bit closer to the present.
Who hasn’t watched a TV show or movie set in the future and watched the characters appear to magically control their home’s music, temperature, blinds, and overall ambiance simply by touching a panel in the wall?

If you’ve spent this quarantine period escaping into that type of entertainment, we’re not judging. We’re also telling you that thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT), it is easier than ever to install such a system in your own home, even if that home is a New York City apartment. And if you've already taken on some of these small projects that can add tremendous value to a home, now could be the time to take on a more high-tech endeavor.
In the early days of IoT, setting up smart homes required the kind of invasive installation that most co-op boards and building managers were none too happy about. But thanks to significant technological advances, many smart home and security retailers offer wireless solutions that will work in all types of New York homes without permanent fixtures or direct landline connections. As a matter of fact, there are only three components every smart home system needs:

  • A hub to control all devices. This can be anything from a central control panel to one’s own smartphone or tablet.
  • Compatible software to control and sync gadgets. Many ready-made home systems will already offer this, but those going the DIY route should take care to check with the hub’s manufacturer to ensure that the apps and devices will work with it.
  • Smart devices themselves! Depending on the kind of smart home you wish to create, these can include anything and everything from energy-saving thermostats to video doorbells to multi-room speakers.
It is interesting to note that developers have also come around to IoT, namely to the possibility that such a high-tech infrastructure will make for piqued interest in the short term and increased value in the long term. We take a look at some of the top smart technology systems on the market and listings that have incorporated them.

Savant-01 Image via Savant
We've all made musical playlists like "Good Morning," Dinner Party," and Relaxation," but Savant takes that several steps further by allowing users to program their whole homes for such experiences with special settings for temperature, blinds, security, music, and lighting. Profiles can be created for family members and staff alike, and the app lets users check on their homes from a distance. And at the end of the day, one need only tap "Good night" in the app to turn off the lights throughout the home without getting out of bed.

This state of art home also features black out and solar electric shades, a built in wine fridge, individually controlled HVAC system, Nest thermostats, laundry room with Bosch washer/dryer, Gaggenau appliances, Savant smart home system along with hidden sliding TV & entertainment panel. Crestron-01 Image via Crestron
From the music presets to the entertainment options, from the security cameras to temperature control, it might be easier to ask what Crestron does not do than what the smart home system does. Just as some homes' boundaries extend beyond four walls to private terraces or pools, so too do Crestron's capabilities. This sounds extensive and exhaustive, but is as easy to operate as speaking an order or tapping a button.

Lutron-01 Image via Lutron
Lutron has become the definitive name where automated shades are concerned, but the system offers a great deal more than that. It is possible to control one's home's lighting, temperature, and overall atmosphere at the sound of a voice or the touch of a button, from the heart of the home to the other side of the world.
927-Fifth-Avenue-1 All images of 927 Fifth Avenue via Compass
