Some East Village residents mourned the closing of the Astor Place Kmart, the chain’s last in New York City, but news soon emerged to cheer them up: Vornado Realty Trust announced that Wegmans grocery store would take over the space in a 30-year lease to occupy 82,000 square feet. Opening is estimated for the second half of 2023. This will be the first Wegmans in Manhattan, but not the last - on a second-quarter earnings call, Vornado chairman Steven Roth said, “You can bet that we will do several more Manhattan deals with Wegmans.”

If New York’s first Wegmans location is anything to go on, business will boom - in October 2019, over 25,000 “Wegmaniacs” in Brooklyn Navy Yard broke the chain’s record for opening day sales. More recently, when Trader Joe’s opened its first Long Island City outpost, locals attended an opening-day celebration with music and giveaways. However, the enthusiasm for new supermarkets goes beyond appreciation for the stores’ exclusive offerings and helpful staff. Convenience has been at a premium at a time when no one wanted to be out of the house for longer than necessary; and, even in the rosiest of times, even the most die-hard New Yorkers weren’t enthusiastic about lugging heavy bags of groceries for several blocks, if not on the subway.

Between these mindsets and the Trader Joe’s effect, many luxury developers are promoting nearby grocery stores as much as they would their more over-the-top amenities. Below, we take a look at a number of buildings throughout the city with grocery stores within a few blocks, if not an elevator ride away. The buildings are ranked by the nearby grocery stores' Yelp rating.
