Overview of The Bryant at 16 West 40th Street

The Bryant, completed in 2017 at 16 West 40th Street, is a 34-story mixed-use tower designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect David Chipperfield with Stonehill & Taylor as architects of record. Developed by HFZ Capital Group under Ziel Feldman, the project represented a $252.8 million investment, partially funded through the EB-5 program.

The building houses 57 condominium residences from floors 16 through 34, positioned above 215 hotel rooms on floors 2 through 15. Its distinctive design features a marble terrazzo façade that transitions seamlessly from exterior to interior, complemented by consistent grid fenestration and discrete Juliet balconies. The residences showcase heated fumed oak herringbone floors, floor-to-ceiling windows, and high-end finishes including Statuarietto marble.

Positioned directly across from Bryant Park and the New York Public Library, the building offers residents views of these landmarks along with the Empire State Building and Manhattan skyline. The location provides immediate access to Fifth Avenue shopping and Midtown's cultural attractions.

Residential amenities include a 24-hour attended lobby, fitness center with sauna, and the exclusive Terrace Club featuring a fireplace and full-service bar overlooking Bryant Park. Residents also have access to hotel services.

The building's most notable residences include a dramatic triplex penthouse spanning 4,078 square feet with a double-height loggia and multiple terraces. Other units range from one-bedroom apartments of approximately 1,067 square feet to four-bedroom homes exceeding 2,700 square feet.

The project marked a significant transformation of what was previously a long-vacant site, replacing an unrealized Starwood Capital Group project that had been designed by Morris Adjmi. The Bryant represents Chipperfield's contribution to one of Manhattan's most prestigious locations, incorporating his modernist sensibilities while maintaining a dialogue with the surrounding architectural context.

Carter’s Review

"This handsome, 34-story mixed-use tower at 16 West 40th Street was erected in 2017 by the HFZ Capital Group of which Ziel Feldman is a principal.

Mr. Feldman’s other Manhattan projects include several of the city’s most attractive pre-war residential buildings such as the Belnord at 225 West 86th Street, the Marquand at 11 East 68th Street, the Chatsworth at 340 West 72nd Street and the Astor at 235 West 75th Street."
