The neighborhood is primarily known for its status as the former piano manufacturing capital of New York City and still has a large of collection of industrial buildings with plenty of historic character. New developments continue to pop-up in the area including a condominium called The Joinery and a rental called Crescendo. Creative office space is planned not far from Port133 as part of a development called Union Crossing at 825 East 141st Street.
