On May 6, 2024, luminaries of all stripes will descend on the Upper East Side for the Met Gala, also known as “the Oscars of the East Coast” and “fashion’s biggest night” for the celebrity attendees and their creative takes on the theme. This year’s theme is “The Garden of Time,” taken from a short story by J.G. Ballard, and the event is being held in celebration of a new Costume Institute exhibition called “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” The historic garments are so old and delicate that they cannot safely be displayed on mannequins, but will be displayed via video animation, light projection, AI, and CGI.

Met Gala icon Rihanna has confirmed her attendance (though not her arrival time), and speculation is equally juicy about who will and will not be in attendance (sorry, not Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce). If you didn’t receive a coveted invitation, Vogue will live-stream the red carpet on all its digital platforms, including YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok.

At the end of the night, some guests will retire to hotel rooms, but others will go home to their own beds – New York is home to several arts and business powerhouses. Met Gala co-chair Jennifer Lopez recently found a buyer for her NoMad penthouse, and we look at other celebrity purchases, sales, and listings from April 2024.

In March 2022, media mogul Rupert Murdoch listed a four-level spread on the upper levels of One Madison for a total of $78 million. A three-bedroom he owned went quickly; but two years, one divorce, two engagements, a new uptown apartment, and several price reductions later, the triplex penthouse is back on the market at a lower price than ever. Appraiser Jonathan Miller told Bloomberg, which announced the listing, that the penthouse’s polarizing owner may be a factor in its length of time on the market.

From the Listing:
At the pinnacle of One Madison, the Triplex Penthouse spans almost 7,000 square feet of expansive living space from the 58th to the 60th floor. The striking double-height windows offer panoramic 360-degree vistas of the skyline and both the East and Hudson Rivers. Providing an unparalleled viewpoint of Manhattan and its iconic structures.

Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, this residential marvel exudes sophistication and timeless elegance. The heart of this magnificent home is the double-height Great Room, with its soaring ceilings and a generous 586-square-foot terrace that invites entertaining against a backdrop of the city. The thoughtful floor plan also includes a formal dining room and a gourmet kitchen equipped with the finest appliances, complemented by a library and powder room on the main level for added sophistication.

The house at 34 East 62nd Street has attracted notoriety for two reasons: The house that originally stood on the site was blown up in a gas explosion during the owners’ bitter divorce, and its replacement was purchased by Marcus Lemonis, business executive/former CNBC host. The Wall Street Journal reports that he and his wife Bobbi are listing it for nearly double the $18 million they paid for it in 2021, but their broker estimates that between the sticker price and the subsequent remodel, it would come out relatively even if it sold for the ask.

From the Listing:
Perfectly positioned on East 62nd Street, moments from Madison Avenue and Central Park, this five bedroom, nine bath, five-story townhouse was built ground up and recently completed. 20 feet wide and spanning over 9,200 square feet, this house features an exceptional landscaped garden and a rooftop terrace comprised of the entire top level. Graced by a French Limestone façade and boasting stunning, bowed French windows and a slate mansard roof, this magnificent “entertainers” home is also outfitted with state-of-the-art construction and technology, representing a unique opportunity to own in Manhattan’s most coveted neighborhood.

Well, that’s one mystery solved: The identity of the buyer of an Upper West Side townhouse renovated to Passive House standards. It was unavailable when it entered contract in March 2024, but the New York Post traced it to Lee Child, author of the Jack Reacher books that inspired the hit TV show. The sale was recorded shortly before his previous residence, a co-op on Central Park West, entered contract.

From the Listing:
Designed by architects Thom & Wilson in 1889, 25 West 88th Street is one of the finest renovated single-family townhouses on the Upper West Side. This triple mint home is among the first in Manhattan to receive a national designation as a Platinum Certified LEED Home and Passive Energy Certification. Spread across over 8,000 square feet of interior living space and seven floors are six bedrooms plus several activity rooms leaving space for exercise, meditation and crafts.

Before supermodel Gisele Bundchen married former husband Tom Brady and moved to Tribeca, she lived in an Italianate brownstone townhouse in the Village following her breakup with Leonardo DiCaprio in 2005. Built in 1851 by Smith Woodruff Masons, this Italianate townhouse is rich in historic details while affording every imaginable modern amenity. The home consists of 4 full living floors and a finished, high ceilinged basement. With new appliances, roof, leaded glass windows, Savant Home System and remote access, this home has the most discerning buyer in mind.

Despite performing the most famous version of “New York, New York,” Frank Sinatra declined to make the city his permanent home, keeping residences in Palm Springs and Los Angeles. He lived in a Lenox Hill townhouse from 1963 to 1969, longer than he was with ex-wife Mia Farrow (which a neighbor notes wasn't the happiest time), and sold the house after he wasn’t allowed to build a garage there. The family he sold it to kept it for more than 50 years, and the New York Post announced that it has been listed.
