Features

On a cold day, there's nothing like warming up in front of a fireplace. Some might think New Yorkers would have to resort to visiting a bar or amenity space to enjoy this experience, but this feature can be found in multi-family buildings. These are mostly in prewar buildings; in modern construction, fireplaces tend to be reserved for the penthouse due to ventilation.

In any building, an apartment with a fireplace is likeliest to feature a wood-burning or decorative fireplace. Wood-burning fireplaces provide the most warmth and a natural ambiance, but this particular model isn't for everyone. Between having to stoke the fire and the fact that it absolutely cannot be left unattended, this isn't always the most relaxing setting. Moreover, it's clear that wood-burning fireplaces emit soot and smoke, but owners are also advised to make sure their carbon monoxide alarms are in working order.

Decorative fireplaces offer much less of a hassle while still serving as the natural focal point of any living room. While they don't offer the same warmth as their wood-burning counterparts, it's easy enough to create the ambiance of a working fireplace with design ideas like decorative wood, string lights, or candles. Some decorative fireplaces may be made functional, but New York owners should check with their building first.

Below, we take a look at listings throughout New York with wood-burning or decorative fireplaces. Many are under the impression that this is a perk reserved for grand townhouses or exclusive penthouses, but all of the following listings are priced below $625K.
