A new rental project too horrible to be true has opened at 519 Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights. Designed by Westchester-based Jeffrey Sandor Orling Architect, the project doubles the height of a turn-of-the century townhouse and increases its units from 3 to 10.
Located midway on a stately stretch of Eastern Parkway — Brooklyn’s Champs-Elysée of sorts — the 3-floor addition awkwardly cantilevers off the west side of the townhouse and unites the two volumes with an asymmetrical fire escape. The limestone house is painted white and nonsensically, the new floors are clad in brown brick and painted concrete. A tan-colored cornice tops the building; this way, marketing materials can proclaim the building as a respectful addition to the Crown Heights community.
The apartment interiors are a bit better and are fitted with some novel lighting fixtures, cabinetry and tile work. The lack of a coherent design has yielded relatively affordable units where a one-bedroom can be had for $2,000/month (net price). Units have stainless steel appliances, wood flooring, operable windows and central air. The building has a roof deck, virtual doorman and is close to the 2,3,4,5 Franklin/Nostrand station.
